1. ELIGIBILITY

  1. League and tournament players (and alternates) must be paid members of the Michigan Squash Racquets Association (MSRA) prior to participation in MSRA play.
  2. League players (regular and alternate) must be members of the club they represent, unless MSRA board approval is given.
  3. All MSRA members, including professionals, are eligible for entry into MSRA tournaments, with the following exception: players that have accepted more than first round prize money in a doubles tournament within the last 12 months are not eligible to play in MSRA doubles tournaments.

2. HOST CLUB BAN RULES

  1. If a Club is hosting an MSRA league match or tournament and the Club has banned an MSRA member from playing at or entering the Club, the MSRA will honor the Club's ban.
  2. The MSRA member will not be permitted to play matches at a different venue in order to avoid the ban.
  3. For MSRA tournaments held at the banning club, the banned MSRA member will not be entered into the tournament draw.
  4. For league play, a substitute player must be used for the league match or the banned MSRA member's team will forfeit the match.

3. MSRA BAN RULES

  1. Upon a written complaint received by a member of the MSRA regarding the on-court behavior of a member during an MSRA tournament or league match witnessed by the complaining member, a subcommittee of the Board will be appointed by the President or highest ranking official who was not a witness of the match which is the subject matter of the complaint.
  2. If nobody is willing to act, the matter must be tabled until a subcommittee can be formed. A complaint that has been tabled for two years will be dropped.
  3. The subcommittee shall determine whether the complained of behavior was antagonistic, belittling, reckless, injurious, or disruptive.
  4. A referee's or judge's decisions (if any) during the incident are to be ignored for purposes of the determination (e.g., failure to impose penalties shall not be indicative that the behavior is sporting, and vice versa).
  5. If the subcommittee determines that the behavior was antagonistic, belittling, reckless, injurious, or disruptive and hence a departure from sporting behavior, the subcommittee shall recommend that the board impose a sanction against the player or players involved in the incident.
  6. The board shall determine by majority vote the appropriate ban and length of the ban. The ban may consist of barring the player from tournaments or league play for part of a year, a year, multiple years and even for life.

4. TEAM ROSTERS

  1. Team rosters must include the lineup of regular players and all alternates. Rosters should list each player's first and last name and telephone numbers. All teams will comprise four players.
  2. Players must play in the order in which they appear on the team roster. Alternates must play in their position of ability within the team for a given match. A player, regular or alternate may only play one position for a given match.
  3. Team lineups may be changed during the year-end break. Changes must be submitted to the MSRA League Coordinators (see list of MSRA Board Members).
  4. Alternates may be added to a team roster by submitting their names and telephone numbers to the MSRA League Coordinators (see MSRA Board Member list) in writing prior to their taking part in league play. Reminder: alternates must be paid members of the MSRA prior to playing and can only play once per week.
  5. A player who plays in a league match or tournament before their MSRA dues are paid loses the match. Players added as alternates after rosters are published must join the MSRA before playing.
  6. Squash professionals may only play at the "5.0" team position number 1.

5. MATCH SCHEDULES - FORFEIT TIME

A. LEAGUE

    1. Team matches are scheduled to begin between 6:00 - 7:00 PM unless prior agreements to play earlier have been mutually agreed upon between players.
    2. Exceptions to the preceding times will appear on the website on individual club rosters.

NOTE: Under no circumstances is a league match to be played after these stated times.

    3. A match will be defaulted if a player is not present and ready to play by 1 (one) hour after location start-up time.
    4. League 4.5, 4.0, 3.5 and 3.0 winners move up to the next league for the following season and bottom place finishers in leagues 5.0, 4.5, 4.0 and 3.5 move down to the next league for the following season.

B. TOURNAMENTS

    1. Forfeit time is fifteen minutes after the scheduled match time (see Rule 7).
    2. The drawsheet is the official notice of all match play. It is the player's responsibility to check the drawsheet.
    3. For 5.0, 4.5, 4.0 and 3.5 singles Tournaments, the MSRA Tournament Coordinator(s) will have the option to limit the entries to players of that same level. Criteria for considering other players are: performance in tournament and league play, and size of the draw.
    4. At the time the draw is published, it becomes official and no late entries will be admitted into the draw without the approval of the MSRA Tournament Coordinator(s) in special circumstances.
    5. In the B Doubles, C Doubles, and Mixed Doubles Tournaments, the previous year's winners cannot play together for the next year's tournament, rather they must wait a year before playing together again in that tournament.

C. GENERAL

    1. Matches may be scheduled earlier, but under no circumstances may a match (league or tournament) be played later than the scheduled date.
    2. All players are requested to adhere to dress codes established by MSRA member clubs as indicated in the Directory.
    3. MSRA tournament and league players must wear eye protection meeting Standard Specification F 803.
    4. Annual Physical Examinations are advised for all players.

6. REFEREE

  1. League. Each club is responsible for providing two referees. Referees may be team members or other members of the MSRA. Failure of a team to provide a referee will result in that team defaulting the match.
  2. Tournament referees. The tournament director is responsible for providing a referee for the first match on each court for each day of the tournament. Thereafter the winning player is responsible for refereeing the next match on that court.
  3. Referees should be familiar with the latest provisions of the United States Squash Racquets Association's (USSRA) Singles and Doubles Playing Rules and Instructions for Referees, available from the USSRA.

7. LEAGUE SCORING

A. One point is awarded for each game won.

B. Team match winner is awarded two bonus points. Team match winner is determined in the following manner:

    1. Most matches won unless tied 2 -2
    2. Most games won unless tied
    3. Most points won unless tied in which case points are shared.

C. One bonus point awarded to each team fielding four eligible players.

D. A match won by default is considered completed for scoring.

E. Matches not completed or defaulted by both players will result in no points being awarded to either of the players involved.

8. RECORDING LEAGUE SCORES

Both captains have the responsibility of reporting all scores. This includes the names of the players, match and game scores. Scores are to be reported to the league coordinator by 5:00 p.m. the following day. Failure to report the score shall result in three points being deducted from the responsible team.

9. DEFAULTS

A. LEAGUE

    1. Players must play in order of ability, including alternates, for a given match. i.e. the best player plays #1, second best #2 etc. If a player defaults then players below move up in order. i.e. if player #2 defaults then player #3 moves up to #2 and player #4 moves up to #3.
    2. A match will be defaulted if a player is not present and ready to play by 1 hour after location start-up time.
    3. Team failure to provide a referee.

B. TOURNAMENT

Unless excused for good and sufficient cause by the MSRA President, MSRA Tournament Coordinator(s), or the host club Tournament Director, a player not in the court and ready to play within fifteen minutes of scheduled match time shall be defaulted.

C. GENERAL

Disqualification under USSRA for breaches of court etiquette in either speech or conduct, etc.

10. PLAYING IN MORE THAN ONE LEAGUE

If a player plays regularly at the number 1, 2, or 3 position in a higher league, he/she may not play regularly or substitute in a lower league and is excluded from tournaments in a lower classification.

11. BALL

The MSRA Board Members and Club Representatives prior to the season will determine the official ball for league and tournament play.

12. DETERMINATION OF PLAY-OFF AND WINNER AND RUNNER-UP

  1. In the case of a tie in the final league standings, the winning team during head-to-head season play will hold the higher position. If the teams involved are contending for the last play-off spot, the teams will be required to play a preliminary round to determine a qualifier for the last play-off spot. In the case of a tie for the league championship (1st place), co-champions will be declared, however, the winning team during head-to-head season play will be declared at the #1 position.
  2. The leagues will have 4 play-off positions. In the first round, #4 plays #1, #3 plays #2.
  3. Because of the large number of teams in certain classes, the MSRA Board Members may establish, prior to commencement of league play, various scheduling techniques to complete league play prior to the Awards (examples: arbitrarily shortening season, establishing two divisions within one league, etc.).
  4. Regular team players must play in the league playoffs unless permission is given by the President of the MSRA or by his designated representatives.
  5. All playoffs are to be played at a neutral location on courts with a minimum width of 20 feet.

13. PENALTIES

  1. The MSRA may invoke sanctions against chronic no-show players. Specifically, a league player, who, in case of absence, does not provide for an alternate (or play the match in advance), may be deemed ineligible for the next year's league play. Likewise, a tournament player who defaults once without informing his opponent (or the Tournament Director) beforehand may be made ineligible for the next tournament they are eligible for.
  2. Players violating the Rules of Conduct may, in addition to defaulting the match, have season's playing rights forfeited.

14. EXCEPTIONS

  1. Exceptions to the printed rules may be made by the Officers of the MSRA upon written request.
  2. The Officers shall have final authority regarding all disputes.

15. WOMEN'S LEAGUE

  1. Match weeks are listed on the schedule. Each date is a Monday, and the match must be played and the score reported by the following Sunday evening. You can always preplay a match. For ex: start date 10/25 (Mon); score expected by 10/31 (Sun).
  2. Report scores to Women's League V. P. The winner of the match is responsible for calling in the score. Give your name and your opponent's name, as well as the score.
  3. Each person is responsible for contacting her opponent, with no priority assigned to being the "home" or "away" person. It is assumed phone messages will be returned promptly to facilitate setting up a date and time. If you are having problems getting in touch with your opponent, please contact the Women's League V. P.
  4. FAILURE TO OBTAIN AN ALTERNATE (SUBSTITUTE) WILL RESULT IN A DEFAULT FOR THAT WEEK'S MATCH. THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED TO AVOID MAKE-UP MATCHES OR DELAYS IN THE SCHEDULE. Points won by a substitute will be awarded to the league player.
  5. Forfeit time. A match will be defaulted if a player is not present and ready to play by 1/2 hour after an agreed upon time. It is assumed that in the event of a delay, timely notification will be made by phone to opponent , or club where opponent is waiting, so the match can be rescheduled. (Please note: tournament forfeit time is 15 minutes.)
  6. League scoring:
  7. One point awarded for each match won. Matches are complete when one player reaches 3 games first.

Matches not completed or defaulted by both players will result in no points being awarded to either of the players involved.

No points will be awarded to a player whose MSRA dues are not paid.

  8. These rules are in accordance with the MSRA rules published on the squash website. Any issues which arise will be resolved consistent with those rules. Please refer to these rules for league and tournament play.
  9. Eligibility: MSRA dues and a $5 League Fee to cover mailing and trophy costs.
